WATERTOWN — A Sunday softball league and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department are at odds over fees the league would pay this year to use the fields at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

Watertown Sunday Softball League officials attended Monday night’s City Council meeting to complain about a proposed flat fee for the league’s season. League members claim it would cost them more than $5,000, while Parks and Recreation Department Superintendent Erin E. Gardner calls this an exaggeration.

Mrs. Gardner said she won’t know the cost until the league provides details about the number of teams that will be in the league and the number of games played. If the new fee had been in effect last year, the league would have paid $3,360, she said.

League officials hope to meet soon with Mrs. Gardner to talk about the matter. Councilman Joseph M. Butler Jr. said he hopes the league will remain in Watertown. The 44-year-old league plays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays, usually beginning after Mother’s Day and ending in August.

The league usually consists of about 15 teams and 15 to 20 players per team.
