WATERTOWN — New York Air Brake Co., in conjunction with Elyria, Ohio-based Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, will open a new laboratory this fall at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

The Knorr-Bremse North America Mechatronics Laboratory will serve both university students and engineers at Bendix and Air Brake, which is headquartered in Watertown at 748 Starbuck Ave. The two companies are members of the Knorr-Bremse Group, and they jointly make up Knorr-Bremse North America. Based in Munich, Germany, Knorr-Bremse is a global manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles.

The nearly laboratory at the university will feature five equipment stations that use technology from Air Brake and Bendix.

The stations and lab work are designed to expose students to a full range of mechatronics equipment and situations, from pure electronics to pure mechanics.
