HAMMOND — Hammond Central School Board of Education members appointed Principal Karen L. Carswell as the school’s superintendent Tuesday.

“I am very excited,” Ms. Carswell said. “We have great staff here. We’re all on the same page as far as student achievement and getting students ‘career and college ready.”

Ms. Carswell will be paid a prorated $107,000 salary beginning with her Oct. 15 start date.

Ms. Carswell has served as principal for three years. She will take the place of current interim Superintendent Robert Wagoner.

Board members said they were pleased with the choice.

“I think you can ask any board member at this table and they will tell you we’re so happy and fortunate to have Karen with us,” Board President Marjorie McCullough.

“I think she has more than proven herself already,” as principal, board member Bernard Martin said.

Board members held a special meeting in July to appoint Kathleen Cruikshank as new principal.

She is expected to begin her duties Sept. 1, according to Ms. Carswell.

Mrs. Cruikshank has been employed by St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES as an education coach and has taught at Potsdam and Malone elementary schools.
