WADDINGTON — The team of Ogdensburg’s Bob Marceau and Clayton’s Dick Garlock have been known to draw big dividends from long runs toward the 1000 Islands region during area bass fishing tournaments.

On Saturday they decided to go downriver toward Massena, instead of upriver, and the “road less traveled” led them to first place in the Northern New York Bassmasters Team Trail Tournament out of Waddington.

The veteran duo combined for a 21.59-pound bag, anchored by a 4.79 smallmouth, in a close race with Nick Eells and Joe Clary who placed second at 20.57 pounds in just their second club tournament.

Gary Rayner and Kyle Dominie took third at 19.32 and Dominie landed the lunker of the tournament with a 5.45-pound smallmouth bass.

Fourth place went to Chris Backus and Paul Streeter at 18.18 pounds and Robert and Brad Paradis took fifth at 18.42 pounds.

“We don’t normally go that way but we found some good spots when we prefished. Today the fish were there but they just weren’t as active as we would like,” said Marceau of the decision to fish in the Massena area for the tournament.

“We fished in shallow water all day. I stuck with my favorite spinner bait looking for the more active fish and Dick used a drop shot to go after the less active fish.”

Garlock and Marceau also took over the lead in the season team standings by one point, 784-783, over the husband and wife duo of Capella and Capella of Canton.

Ogdensburg’s Tim O’Grady and Steve Garrabrant stands fourth at 769 followed by another Ogdensburg tandem in Robert and Brad Paradis at 766 and the Nichols-Nichols team at 765.

The next stop on the NNY Bassmasters Team Trail will be at Cranberry Lake on Aug. 9.
