GOUVERNEUR — The village has received two applications from employees interested in succeeding Michael Moroz III as superintendent of the Department of Public Works.

Mr. Moroz is retiring, effective July 15.

“We only asked for applications from within. That’s all we’ve done so far. We didn’t ask for applications from the outside, but we could do that,” Mayor Ronald P. McDougall said. “The board will be discussing that.”

Dan Forbes, who works in the village’s water plant and wastewater plant, and Leroy Blair, a motor equipment operator, applied for Mr. Moroz’s position, Mr. McDougall said.

He laughed at talk that the village already had agreed to give the job to St. Lawrence County Legislator Donald A. Peck, D-Gouverneur.

“I’ve heard the rumor,” Mr. McDougall said.

Mr. Peck was unavailable for comment, but Mr. McDougall said he had no information that Mr. Peck had applied to work in the DPW.

Mr. Peck is challenged by Republican Travis E. Dann. A whispering campaign could have started that the incumbent is worried, said Mr. McDougall, who is a Democrat like Mr. Peck.

“It could have some political overtones that he thinks he’s going to get beat,” Mr. McDougall said.
