MASSENA — Low-income residents who want to have their pets spayed or neutered will be able to get the procedure done at a discount at the Massena Humane Society.

The shelter has a new surgical room where a veterinarian performs spaying and neutering for animals at the shelter, and now it’s expanded that service to pets of low-income residents. The cost is $50, which also could include a rabies shot if necessary.

“We’ve been doing it for maybe six or eight weeks. We’re starting to have good success,” shelter manager Heidi J. Bradish said.

She said the shelter is targeting pets belonging to low-income animal owners who don’t have the funds to pay for the procedure at a veterinary clinic. Animals can be spayed or neutered as early as eight weeks.

The shelter also hopes to assist people who are tending to stray cats and want to ensure they don’t have more kittens.

For more information, stop by the Massena Humane Society on South Raquette River Road or call 764-1330.
