PULASKI — A Pulaski man pushed his 6-year-old son to safety after they fell in the Salmon River while fishing Friday, but he could not save himself.
State police said William Hibbard, 37, was fishing with his son about 11:30 a.m. when they lost their footing and fell in the water. Witnesses saw the two in the river under the Route 11 bridge. Mr. Hibbard was seen pushing his son toward other fishermen on shore, who pulled the boy to safety.
Mr. Hibbard then went under water, police said. Two fisherman dived in and pulled him ashore, where CPR was started. He was taken by ambulance to Oswego Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:24 p.m.
The boy, who was not identified, was not harmed.
The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and the Pulaski Fire Department also responded.
