Twenty-seven teams comprised of more than 300 St. Lawrence County survivors, caregivers and supporters showed their dedication to the eradication of cancer with the Ogdensburg Relay for Life.

The Relay event raised more than $62,000 this year for the American Cancer Society, according to Jason Sovie, the Relay for Life event coordinator.

“Teams have until August to compile all their fundraising dollars,” Mr. Sovie said. “So there is still money coming in, and we’ve already reached our goal.”

The money will go towards cancer research.

“Everyone showed good community spirit, and not just people from the city of Ogdensburg,” said Larry Caufield, keynote speaker and Relay for Life volunteer. “They came from all over.”

Mr. Caufield, a cancer survivor, said this is the sixth year his team, Collect for the Cure, participated in the event. This year they raised $7,000 by holding several fundraisers before the event.

“Our team in memory of my brother, Charlie,” Mr. Caufield said. “Each year it is always a wonderful turnout. It is always so heartwarming to see the number of youth that participate and to see the elderly who slowly but proudly make their way around the track.”

At the Relay, supporters and survivors participated in many events throughout the evening and the Relay lasted until the early morning hours.

“What was most surprising was that 150 survivors attended the survivor’s reception,” Mr. Caufield said. “That’s by far the largest we have ever served. It was wonderful to see the fellowship outpouring of support the survivors gave to each other.”
