Capt. Clark retiring from Watertown Police Department

WATERTOWN — Capt. Cheryl A. Clark will retire from the Watertown Police Department on June 28.

Her retirement was announced Friday afternoon in a news release, along with the promotion of Lt. Michael J. LaBarge to acting captain.

For the past two years, she served as captain after receiving a promotion from lieutenant in July 2012.

During her 28-year career, Capt. Clark also served as police officer, sergeant and detective sergeant.

She recently took the Civil Service exam for the police chief position. On June 9, Lt. Charles P. “Chip” Donoghue was named the new police chief, succeeding Gary C. Comins, who is leaving the department June 28.

During her career, Capt. Clark achieved the master instructor qualification and served at several local academies. Spending half her career as a supervisor, she specialized in driving while intoxicated and highway interdiction.

She also helped develop department policies and procedures. Capt. Clark was recognized with several awards and accommodations, including the state MADD-STOP DWI Award, Meritorious Service Award, Unit Citation, Life-Saving Medal and Silver Star Award from the Northern Federation of Law Enforcement Officers.

Lt. LaBarge will serve as acting police captain starting June 29. He will be appointed to captain July 8.

Lt. LaBarge has been with the city police department since 1998. He was promoted to lieutenant in March 2013.
