BRIER HILL — The Brier Hill Volunteer Fire Department has received a $29,973 federal grant to purchase new equipment.

The funding was announced last week by U.S. Sens. Kirsten E. Gillibrand and Charles E. Schumer, both D-N.Y.

The department will use the money to purchase new “Jaws of Life” equipment, used to free accident victims who are trapped in their vehicles. According to a news release announcing the grant, the department’s equipment is unable to cut through newer cars.
