MASSENA — Traffic was detoured around the intersection at Main Street and Route 37 for several hours Monday after a truck hit a Verizon pole.
Lt. Mark LaBrake from the Massena Police Department said a truck from the St. Lawrence County Solid Waste Department was turning right from Route 37 onto Main Street.
“He cut the corner a little too sharp and took out the pole that belonged to Verizon,” Lt. LaBrake said.
As the pole snapped, it also took down wires and a traffic light, he said.
The accident occurred just before noon Monday. Traffic was flowing again by 4 p.m. Representatives from the state Department of Transportation, Verizon and Time Warner Cable were on the scene, along with village police and the Massena Fire Department.
“We estimated with the DOT and Verizon and Time Warner at the time of the incident it would be about four hours” to replace the pole and get traffic flowing again, Lt. LaBrake said.
No power outages were reported.
“It was not a power pole,” he said.
Joshua A. Wilson, 32, of 32 King St., was cited with failure to stay in designated lane.
