MORRISTOWN — A fire destroyed a summer trailer, garage and small fishing boat at 9 County Route 5 on Sunday afternoon.

Hammond, Brier Hill and Morristown fire departments responded to a fully involved structure fire when the call came in at 12:40 from a neighbor across the street.

Heuvelton and Redwood fire departments were on standby.

St. Lawrence County Fire Investigator W. Joseph Lacks said no one was living at the trailer.

The owners of the home, Tom S. McHale and his wife Karen, from Rush, said the trailer was a summer home they used when their grandchildren came to visit. They’ve had it for seven years.

“Everything’s gone,” Mr. McHale said. “It was a total loss of everything.”

Mr. Lacks also said that except for a few items crews were able to salvage from the garage, it was a total loss.

Mr. Lacks and another fire investigator, Richard B. Anson, from the Edwards Fire Department, determined that the fire started because of the failure of an electrical outlet in the rear bedroom the 14-by-70-foot trailer.

Mr. McHale told Mr. Lacks that all of the windows in the trailer had been left open because they had been cleaning it earlier that day.

Mr. Lacks said that since a window was right above the outlet, oxygen was coming in and feeding the fire.

“That’s why we got a little bit of speed on here,” Mr. Lacks said.

“The whole back half was on fire when we got here,” said Shawn R. Macaulay, fire chief for Brier Hill. “Plus the garage and the boat were on fire too.”

The crews were on the scene for about 90 minutes.

Mr. Lacks said the property was insured.
