GOUVERNEUR Literacy of Northern New York is training volunteers to work with adults who need help with basic reading skills.
The training will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. in the basement of the Gouverneur Library, 60 Church St., on the following days: June 17, June 20 and June 24. Volunteers must attend all three sessions. There is a $25 fee for the textbook or participants can borrow a book during the training. There are several students waiting for tutors in the Gouverneur area.
Volunteers will learn and practice techniques to help a student with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency and sounding out unfamiliar words. After completing the course, each volunteer will be assigned one adult student who needs help with reading skills. Literacy of Northern New York assesses each students reading level and provides the books and materials used during tutoring sessions. Tutors and students meet in public places, such as libraries. Registration for the course is required. Call Literacy of NNY at 782-4270 to register.
