FALCONS PICKS SUS SPRUILL
Marquis Spruill was the second Syracuse player selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, taken 168th overall as the 28th pick in the fifth round by the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday. Jay Bromley was selected 10th in the third round by the New York Giants on Friday night.
Spruill is the first linebacker drafted since Doug Hogue was taken by the Detroit Lions as the 157th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He is the first Orange to be selected by the Falcons since Quinn Ojinnaka (139th overall) in 2006.
The middle linebacker recorded 14.5 tackles for loss this season, tied with Bromley for the most on the team, which put his career total at 41, the second-most in Syracuse history. Spruill finished the season with 66 total tackles, which ranked third on the team and 5.5 sacks, the second-most among the Orange.
A team captain, Spruill was a leader on a defense that ranked 24th in limiting opponents on the ground (137.4 yards per game), 15th in third-down defense (.335, 63-188) and was the only team in the country to prevent an opposing player from rushing for 100 yards.
