DEKALB St. Lawrence County sheriffs deputies on May 2 charged Shawn M. Kennedy, 25, Heuvelton, with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class B felony.
Deputies responded to County Route 16 and Route 812 in the town of DeKalb that afternoon after receiving a call about an unresponsive man who had overdosed on heroin.
Deputies identified Mr. Kennedy after performing CPR at the scene until emergency medical service personnel arrived. Mr. Kennedy was treated by EMTs with the drug Narcan, an opioid antidote that reverses the effects of the narcotic in minutes, and was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, where he was treated and released.
He was arrested at the scene and arraigned in Canton Town Court. He was sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $2,500 bail or $5,000 bond. Sheriffs detectives said the investigation continues and more arrests are expected.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force detectives and major-crimes detectives, the Rensselaer Falls Volunteer Rescue Squad, state police, the U.S. Border Patrol K-9 unit and the St. Lawrence County district attorneys office.
