HARRISVILLE — Any local Girl Scout belonging to the NYPENN Pathways council can attend summer camp sessions throughout the state, but a camp in their own backyard offers more than just crafts and singalongs.

Activities during weeklong sessions at Camp Trefoil, 168 Rose Road, teach girls not to be afraid of adventure and to take leadership roles, according to Judy Gallagher, the council’s marketing and communications director.

“Some of the more high-adventure things come out of Camp Trefoil,” she said. “The thing that I think is the highlight at Camp Trefoil is there’s an intermediate backpack trip where they’ll go up to the peaks of the Adirondack mountains.”

Canoe trips and other outdoor explorations are among the adventures for which girls can sign up.

“It’s a wonderfully small, unique camp,” Mrs. Gallagher said. “Girls really take a leadership role, as per planning their activities. Once they get there, they work with their counselors to plan their day-to-day activities.”

Camp Trefoil, which is accredited by the American Camp Association, can accommodate about 100 people per night, and about 215 people per day. The camp has an outdoor educational center with lab tables, science equipment and power lighting. While Girl Scouts from throughout Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties attend Camp Trefoil because of its proximity, girls also are invited to attend camps throughout the council, including some near Ithaca and Binghamton.

Opportunities at camp may include boating sessions, horse sessions, a spa week and environmental education.

All girls entering grades two through 12 are invited to participate in Girl Scout camp, including those who are not registered with the Scouting program. Camp experiences are more expensive for nonmembers, but girls may, at any time, become a Girl Scout member for just $15.
