MASSENA Village police are urging residents to exercise caution handling hypodermic needles after a rash of complaints from citizens who have found them in public places.
In April officers responded to 11 incidents throughout the village related to improper disposal of needles, Chief Timothy J. Currier said.
I want to remind people that hypodermic needles are very dangerous and could cause a serious health risk to anyone handling them improperly, he said in a news release Monday. If you come upon a hypodermic needle, if you do not have training in the proper handling of them, do not handle it.
Anyone who finds a hypodermic needle is asked to call village police at 769-3577 and, if possible, to wait at the location to direct officers to the needle and keep others away from it.
The Massena Drug Free Coalition will meet this week to discuss ideas and develop a program to deal with this trend, Mr. Currier said.
