It has become almost routine for Ogdensburg and North Country residents.

But to me it is still remarkable that through a bit of rapid-fire channel surfing you can watch Lisbon native Rick Carlisle coaching the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA playoffs on one station and Ogdensburg product Jimmy Howard tending goal for the Detroit Red Wing in the Stanley Cup playoffs on another.

Carlisle started his basketball career in the Ogdensburg Biddy Basketball program in the OFA gym on Saturday mornings.

Many years later Howard made his first competitive saves in the Ogdensburg Minor Hockey at the Edgar Newell Golden Dome.

Both played Kiwanis Grasshopper Baseball.

Both are a credit to their communities, both take pride in where they came from and both have come home to celebrate world championships.

Rick Carlisle Day was held in Ogdensburg after Carlisle guided the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Playoff crown in 2011 and Howard brought the Stanley Cup to Ogdensburg after serving as reserve in the Red Wings run to the NHL Championship in 2008.

Both came on the losing end of nationally televised games Sunday.

After Carlisle guided the eighth-seeded Mavs into position to snatch a win at No. 1 San Antonio, on Sunday, the Spurs used a 15-0 run to erase an 81-71 deficit and claim a 90-85 victory.

Carlisle remained totally positive after the game.

“Look I love the way we played up until that point. And we fought the whole way. We just didn’t finish. And I’ve got to help our guys finish better,” he said to the media.

Before the game Carlisle, one of all-time great competitors, urged TNT courtside reporter Craig Sager, who has begun treatment for melanoma, to fight his butt off.

The Red Wings, seeded eighth in the NHL Tournament field, came into Sunday’s game at number one Boston with 1-0 lead after Howard’s 25-saves anchored a 1-0 opening victory. The homestanding Bruins used a dominant first-period to claim an equalizing 4-1 victory.

Both Carlisle and Howard have earned a place among the world’s best at what they do and both the Mavericks and the Red Wings showed they have the talent and discipline to take the top seeds the distance.

High School Restart

The Northern Conference will make a second attempt to start its Baseball and Softball season starting today. The weather took away the first week of the baseball-softball season and several lacrosse games just before Spring Break.

Hopefully the weather will allow for a quick restart this week even with the possibility of snow flurries predicted on Wednesday. Local high school baseball and softball teams are all scheduled to begin their seasons and the OFA and Heuvelton lacrosse teams will all resume play today and Wednesday.
