Orchestra of Northern New York offers prize to be maestro for a night

POTSDAM — Music lovers have a chance until Saturday to enter the contest to be “Maestro for A Night”for the Orchestra of Northern New York.

The winner will be trained in conducting and using the baton by Maestro Kenneth Andrews, the orchestra’s conductor and musical director.

The winner will be drawn in front of the live audience in SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall in The Crane School of Music just after intermission Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. at the orchestra’s “Romantic Giants” concert. Tickets are $10 and are available at Northern Music and Video, 29 Market St., The Pear Tree, 77 Main St., Canton, by emailing onnybusiness@gmail.com, calling 267-3251 or the night of the concert in the lobby of Hosmer Hall.

The Romantic Giants concert features Rachmaninoff’s popular 2nd Piano Concerto featuring soloist Paul Wyse, orchestra member and Crane School of Music faculty, the passionate Symphony No. 8 by Antonin Dvorak, and the world premier of the Silver Overture by Harold Levin.

The maestro winner on Saturday has until the July 3 concert to prepare, when he or she will lead one of the “Bravo Broadway” pops concert numbers.

The orchestra will be raffling off four other prizes during its 6th Annual Season Raffle, with tickets available until July 3 through intermission at the Bravo Broadway pops concert. The other four winners will be announced in front of the live audience after intermission.

The prizes are a five-course gourmet dinner prepared at your home by chef Wally Siebel and highlighted by guest waiter Maestro Kenneth Andrews; an “Experience Canton” collection of gift certificates: $15 to the Blackbird Cafe, $55 for a Glow Signature facial at Glow Skincare and Spa, $25 to the Pear Tree gift store, and $50 to The White Pillars Bed and Breakfast; a “Potsdam Package” collection of gift certificates: $20 to the Village Diner, $20 to First Crush cafe, $25 for pizza at Sergi’s, and $17 for two movie tickets at The Roxy Theater; and a “Music Lovers Suite” for the Orchestra of Northern New York 2014-2015 season, which includes a subscription for two and the Community Performance Series 2014-2015 season subscription for two.

A special attraction for concert goers just prior to the 7:30 p.m. Saturday event will be a 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. pre-concert conversation led by Maestro Andrews with Mr. Wyse and composer of “The Silver Overture”and orchestra violinist Mr. Levin, in celebration of ONNY’s first 25 years and beginning of the next.
