WANAKENA Engineers and contractors will look at the Wanakena footbridge, which was heavily damaged by ice in January, in about 10 days to review its condition.
All of the ice has to be gone from under the bridge before officials can look at the foundation and determine whether it needs to be replaced along with the bridge itself, Fine Supervisor Mark C. Hall said.
My number one concern is public safety. We have to do it right, Mr. Hall said. Lets stay slow and steady and well end up with a great bridge back there.
As the ice has gone out and the water has come up, the north side of the bridge has dipped under the water.
Hopefully, the water will continue to recede, Mr. Hall said.
The town is applying for grants to help with replacement of the bridge. The Wanakena Historical Association is handling donations and has about $22,000.
Were plugging away, Mr. Hall said.
