CARTHAGE — The emergency shelter opened by the Red Cross at American Legion Post 789 at 415 West St. was closed Friday.

The Red Cross said the shelter would remain open until everyone affected by the recent flooding along the Black River could return home or find other places to stay.

A total of three people stayed at the shelter, the Red Cross said.

The organization will continue to provide cleanup kits—which include a broom, mop, bleach, bucket, gloves, trash bags and other cleaning supplies—to those in need.

Lewis County Emergency Management is coordinating the distribution of bottled water the Red Cross received from area businesses, including Pepsi, Price Chopper and Walmart, for those affected by the flood in Lowville.
