Morristown moves ahead with village garage construction

MORRISTOWN - The village is moving forward with a plan to construct a village garage that will house the Department of Public Works and the village offices.

The new structure will be located near the current village barn at the intersection of Gouverneur and Northumberland streets.

Expected to total $150,000 the village is currently in the process of soliciting bids to pour the foundation of the building, according to Superintendent of Public Works Kevin J. Crosby.

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said she doesn’t expect the project to be finished this year because the priority for the construction season is the road by-passing the Morristown Bay. She said she hopes to have a substantial portion of the work complete so that it can be easily finished in 2015.

The Department of Public Works will complete as much of the project as possible, Mrs. Shatraw said, in an effort to keep costs down.

Mr. Crosby said they will likely have to contract out for electrical work once the structure is built.

“Our goal this year is to at least have it framed in so that we can work on it during the winter,” Mr. Crosby said.

The building will replace the current village barn, which is aging and no longer large enough to house all of the village’s equipment.

The new barn will have two 10-foot garage doors and two 12-foot doors, Mr. Crosby said, which will provide the department with the space it needs.

In addition there will be a 30-by-20-foot space which may be used by the village for new office space, Mr. Crosby said.

Mrs. Shatraw said village officials haven’t determined if they are going to use the barn as their primary office space or whether they will continue working out of Town Hall on Main Street.

“We have not made the commitment either way,” she said.
