Police chief says gun discharged was Glock .40

WATERTOWN — City police chief Gary R. Comins identified the handgun discharged Monday inside the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building as a Glock .40.

The firearm, a popular type used by law enforcement, has three pistol safeties that are deactivated when the trigger is pulled, according to the gun maker’s website, rather than a safety lever that must be engaged manually before the gun can be fired.

The guns issued to city police officers are standard Glocks without the manual lever, Lt. Joseph R. Donoghue said. “If it falls or is dropped, it won’t fire,” he said.

Chief Comins would not identify the officer involved. “No, that’s not getting released,” he said.

He also would not say how the gun went off or whether the officer faced discipline.

The single shot went off at about 2 p.m. Monday in a conference room at the PSB.

An internal investigation by Watertown police is ongoing.
