CANTON St. Lawrence County is expected to take title to the former Jones & Laughlin Steel Co. site today. All of the legal proceedings are complete, county attorney Michael C. Crowe reported to the county Board of Legislators Monday.
Ownership by the county will enable it to subdivide 18 acres from the 54-acre site in the town of Clifton so they can be marketed for development. The remainder of the property, which is heavily contaminated, may become a Superfund site.
The county also will be reimbursed for all of the money it paid consultant Camp, Dresser, McKee, Cambridge, Mass., for work they did at the site, which had been in dispute with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
