HAMMOND — A man who fell through the ice between Schermerhorn’s Harbor Marina, 71 Schermerhorn Landing Road, and Chippewa Bay was saved Monday after divers and rescue teams spent nearly an hour battling thin ice to rescue him.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, fell through the ice about 5 p.m.

Hammond First Assistant Chief Leonard D. Bickelhaupt said the man was traveling along the frozen river when the ice gave way. The man and his ATV were partially submerged in the water.

“He was in the water for over an hour,” Mr. Bickelhaupt said. “He was able to use his phone because he was not completely submerged. He called a friend for help. His friend called 911.”

Divers and fire and rescue personnel from Morristown, Brier Hill, Ogdensburg, Clayton, Alexandria Bay and Waddington were called to the scene to assist with the rescue.

“It took about an hour to get him,” Mr. Bickelhaupt said. “They sent teams with rafts and floater gear, but the ice was so thin, they kept falling through.”

Mr. Bickelhaupt said while it hasn’t yet been determined why the man was on the ice, he thinks the man was fishing.

“Definitely no one should be on the ice now,” Mr. Bickelhaupt said. “It is not safe.”

The man was back on shore at 5:50 p.m. He then was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg.

Firefighters and rescue workers were unable to recover the ATV.
