GOUVERNEUR — A puppy with a birth defect will receive the potentially lifesaving surgery she needs thanks to community support.

Felicity, a 21-week-old yellow Labrador puppy, is suffering from a congenital bladder defect called ectopic ureter. If left untreated, Felicity’s condition could become life-threatening, exposing her to kidney tract infections, scalding and chronic urinary tract infections. The surgery, which has to be performed at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, Ithaca, will cost $3,000.

Friends 4 Pound Paws, which rescued Felicity after she was found abandoned in an apartment, recently embarked on a fundraising campaign to raise money for the pup’s surgery. In just under two weeks, volunteers have raised more than $4,000 for her surgery.

“Never in our wildest dreams did we think we could raise that amount of money,” Friends 4 Pound Paws Chairwoman Clover J. Forsyth said. “It takes a supportive network to be able to do that, and people with big hearts and a compassion for animals. That is what we saw.”

Ms. Forsyth said donations poured in from the community and surrounding areas, including Watertown, Harrisville, Canton, Potsdam, Star Lake, Hermon, Edwards and other townships.

“I am speechless,” Ms. Forsyth said.

Local Turbo Kick and PiYo instructors raised more than $600 with a fundraiser for Felicity on Saturday.

“It was a big community effort,” Ms. Forsyth said.

Felicity’s surgery will be scheduled for the end of April, Ms. Forsyth said.

While Friends 4 Pound Paws no longer is accepting donations for Felicity, donors can still read updates on Felicity’s progress by visiting http://wdt.me/felicity.
