CLAYTON — The Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund has hired Julie R. Garnsey as executive director.

“Our committee sought someone who is attuned to performing arts, could lead the organization, and appreciate the unique culture and seasons of the area. In Julie, we have a proven leader and manager, a musician, and someone well connected and committed to the Clayton community,” Fred Schmitt, board member and chairman of TIPAF’s executive director search committee, said in a release.

The organization cited Mrs. Garnsey’s skills in financial and staff management, her leadership qualities and her commitment to the 1000 Islands region, the release said.

Mrs. Garnsey was the director of Clayton’s Hawn Memorial Library from 2009 until 2013. In that position, she wrote grant applications, boosted the library’s technology, increased programming and established partnerships with local nonprofit organizations, the release said.

In 2008, she was disaster preparedness coordinator for Jefferson County Public Health. Before that, she was a hospital corpsman for the Navy in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

She holds a bachelor of science degree in health-care management from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill.

She and her husband, Jeffrey T., own and operate Garnsey’s Classic Island Cruises, a charter St. Lawrence River tour business with two classic wooden boats.

She will begin her duties Monday. She succeeds Joseph Gleason Jr., who took a position in New Hampshire.
