OGDENSBURG The Ogdensburg City School District will put Lincoln Elementary School on the market after it closes June 30. At Mondays Board of Education meeting, members agreed unanimously to have voters authorize the sale of the school, 1515 Knox St.
In a city school district, the sale of a building must be approved by voters before the building can be sold, Superintendent Timothy M. Vernsey said. The vote will coincide with the districts election on May 20.
The district planned on closing Sherman and Lincoln elementary schools in June, following the completion of a building project at John F. Kennedy Elementary School to make room for those schools students. But Sherman Elementary was closed last year ahead of schedule in hopes of offsetting reductions in state aid and cost increases.
Mr. Vernsey said the sale of Lincoln Elementary will increase the assessable property base in the city of Ogdensburg and decrease the districts expenses.
The school anticipates it will save $11,300 next year with the closing of Lincoln.
Jeffrey R. Swanson, district business manager, said the district will be asking for sealed bids for the sale of the building after the district receives voter approval. Last year, Lincoln was appraised for $305,000.
