MASSENA — State police on Friday charged John A. Caskinette, 40, with two counts of felony possession of a forged instrument and two counts of misdemeanor offering a false instrument for filing.

Troopers allege that on March 2, Mr. Caskinette traded a snowmobile for the truck with another man, telling the truck owner he was going to scrap the vehicle. Instead, Mr. Caskinette allegedly registered the truck and forged the original owner’s name on the title to receive new license plates, state police said.

Police would not release the name of the alleged victim; however, they said when he went to Department of Motor Vehicles here to turn in the old plates from the truck, he was told the truck had already been reregistered with new plates.

Mr. Caskinette was arraigned in Village Court and released under the supervision of probation.
