WELLESLEY ISLAND — A Canadian man was captured by Border Patrol officials in the basement of an island home Sunday after agents followed his footprints from the Lake of the Isles portion of the St. Lawrence River.

Agents first spotted the unidentified 49-year-old man’s footprints about 5:30 a.m. After confirming the footprint’s origin from across the border, agents followed the footprints to the home. The man attempted to conceal his tracks, agents said, by crawling under trees and brushing his footprints near the entrance of the home.

After confirming with the home’s owner that no one should be there, agents, along with a state trooper and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy, entered the home about 11 a.m. The man was found in the basement, behind a bed.

Law enforcement used his boot to confirm it matched the footprints, and said the man admitted to crossing the border while in custody. Border Patrol public information officer Matthew Bitterman said the man didn’t indicate what his intentions were for crossing the border.

The man was returned to Canada, and prohibited from entering the U.S. for five years.
