The areas minor hockey teams got their New York State Amateur Hockey Association tournaments off to promising starts on Friday.
The boys teams are competing in Amherst while the girls teams are playing in Rochester.
TIER III 18-U BOYS
At the Tier III 18-Under Boys championships, the Louisville Lightning pulled away to a 7-1 win over the Fulton Raiders in their tournament opener.
They return to action when they take to the ice this morning at 6:15 a.m. against Mohawk Valley before closing out the preliminary round against Great Neck starting at 3:25 p.m.
TIER III 16-U BOYS
Both Northern Zone teams won both their games on the first day of the Tier III 16-Under Boys tournament. The Louisville Lightning dropped the Valley Eagles 4-1 in their opening game while Norfolk-Norwood downed Alexandria Bay 5-1. Louisville followed up with a 3-2 decision over Batavia GAHA and N-N improved to 2-0 with a 5-3 win over Jamestown.
The Lightning close out the preliminary round today against Palisades while N-N takes on Bronxville. Both matchups start at 9:55 a.m.
TIER II 16-U BOYS
The St. Lawrence Thunder surged their way to a 7-0 win over Monroe County in their Tier II 16-Under tournament opener then moved to 2-0 with a 6-4 decision over Niagara Jr. P.E.
They wrap up the preliminary round against the Long Island Edge today starting 11:45 a.m.
TIER II 16-U GIRLS
At the Tier II 16-Under Girls championships, the St. Lawrence Thunder opened with a 5-1 win over Cazenovia while the North Country Ice Storm outlasted Monroe County 3-2.
TIER II 12-U GIRLS
The North Country Ice Storm pulled away to a 6-1 win over the CNY Bobcats in their Tier II 12-Under Girls tournament opener.
They return to the ice for the first of two games today at 6:25 a.m. against the Buffalo Regals before closing out the first round against West Seneca at 3:25 p.m.
TIER III 12-U BOYS
Meanwhile, at the USA Hockey Tier III Northeast Regional Tournament in Rhode Island, the Tri-Town Timberwolves PeeWees began defense of their title with a 6-2 win over the New Hampshire Northern Cyclones.
Kaleb Rathbun netted the first three goals for the Timberwolves, who broke away from a 1-1 tie after the first period by outscoring the Cyclones 4-1 in the second. Brendan Phippen connected for the fourth and final goals for Tri-Town while Jah Robertson tallied the fifth. Rathbun later logged an assist. Noah Adams and Payton Felix added a pair of helpers while Carter LePage, Carter Rose and Robertson each earned an assist.
Rico DiMatteo turned aside 10 of the shots he faced working the Timberwolves crease through the first two periods. Torran Robertson made four saves in a scoreless third period of relief.
The Timberwolves will be taking on Connecticut today at 8:20 a.m. before closing out the opening round against Massachusetts starting at 2:30 p.m.
