A Fort Drum man admitted Wednesday in Jefferson County Court that he made a threat in October that prompted all buildings in the Indian River Central School District to go into lockdown.

Caleb J. Larson, 22, pleaded guilty to making a terroristic threat. He told Judge Kim H. Martusewicz that the statement stemmed from a dispute he had with an unidentified male at a birthday party.

“I was just shooting my mouth off, your honor,” Mr. Larson said. “I thought it was a joke.”

Police said at the time that Mr. Larson made a statement to a parent in which he threatened to kill a student at Evans Mills Primary School, a threat that was heard by a cafeteria worker who reported it to school administrators three days later.

Operating under the believe that someone was headed to the school with a gun, law enforcement responded in “active shooter” mode, although that was lifted a short time later after it was determined that there was no imminent danger. No one was hurt.

After entering his plea Wednesday, Mr. Larson was sentenced to six months’ time served at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and five years’ probation.
