LOUISVILLE - Two Massena-area men have been jailed after being charged with reporting an armed robbery Tuesday night at Steves Stop and Shop in an effort to cover up the theft of nearly $1,000 in cash.
Massena-based state police charged Taylor D. Maxwell, 19, of Louisville and Kristopher G. Brothers, 20, of Massena with falsely reporting a robbery.
The charges stem from an investigation conducted by New York State Police into a reported armed robbery at Steves Stop and Shop on State Route 37 in the town of Louisville at approximately 8:17 p.m. Tuesday.
The investigation revealed Maxwell and Brothers staged a fake robbery in order to steal approximately $950 in cash from the registe, state police investigators said.
Maxwell, an employee at Steves Stop and Shop, handed the money to Brothers, who left the store.
To cover up the theft of the money, Maxwell then contacted St. Lawrence County 911 and reported he was robbed by a man displaying a handgun. After several interviews, it was determined Maxwell, with the assistance of Brothers, orchestrated the events.
Maxwell was charged with petit larceny, sixth-degree conspiracy, falsely reporting an incident and making a false written statement. Brothers was charged with petit larceny and sixth-degree conspiracy.
Maxwell and Brothers were arraigned in the town of Louisville Court. Maxwell was sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $1,500 cash, and Brothers was sent to the county jail with bail set at $1,000 cash.
They are both scheduled to reappear March 12 in the town of Louisville Court.
The New York State Police were assisted in the investigation by the St. Lawrence County Sheriffs Department and United States Border Patrol.
