CANTON A Gouverneur woman was sentenced to six months in St. Lawrence County jail and a decade of probation for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old Hammond girl in July.
Olanta D. Clement, 19, of 4366 Route 58, Lot 12, was sentenced Tuesday after her Dec. 6 guilty plea to the class D violent felony of first-degree sexual assault.
Before her sentencing, the victims mother read from a statement to St. Lawrence County Judge Jerome J. Richards, recounting the physical and emotional pain her child experienced from the assault.
She told me two days before Christmas that Santa wasnt going to bring her any gifts because she was bad, her mother said, sobbing. The day I found out what Olanta did was the worst day of my life. She said her daughters testimony before the grand jury was difficult, but she told her mother she did it because she did not want Clement to do this to any other children.
While the statement was being made, Clement looked expressionlessly to the back of the courtroom, where her mother and her own two children sat. Her eyes filled with tears when the victims mother asked that the judge deny her the opportunity to be eligible for youthful offender status.
If Clement were to receive youthful offender status it would mean she would not have a criminal record after serving her time. She should get to register as a sex offender, the victims mother said.
She also told Judge Richards she wanted pictures of Clement and her child taken down from Clements social media sites, where she saw them posted.
If there are any pictures of you with the victim, I am ordering you to take them down, Judge Richards told Clement. If they are not taken down I will deal with it because it is a condition of probation.
In addition to her sentence, Judge Richards denied Clement youthful offender eligibility, and she will have to register as a sex offender following a classification hearing scheduled May 2.
Clement was also ordered to pay $1,425 in court fines, fees and surcharges.
