OGDENSBURG — The Frederic Remington Art Museum has hired a new director of development who will be responsible for promoting membership growth, building new partnerships with other museums across the nation and raising funds.

Melanie E. Flack started last Monday and said she is “very excited” to come on board with the museum.

“It’s a treasure in our community,” she said.

Ms. Flack also will manage the museum’s store in her new position.

Museum Director and Curator Laura A. Foster said the shop manager position has been vacant since September, and in the interest of consolidation, the museum decided to merge that position with the director of development.

“We took this opportunity to re-envision our goals,” she said.

Mrs. Foster said Ms. Flack will spend about 50 percent of her time with the shop and the other half divided equally between membership development and fundraising.

This year, for instance, Ms. Flack will be in charge of the museum’s annual gala.

“This will relieve a great deal of stress from our very small staff,” Mrs. Foster said. “We feel just wildly rich now.”

Mrs. Foster said she is excited by the opportunity to begin expanding the museum’s membership.

“We really haven’t been in a position to build membership in a long time,” she said. “In 2013, for the first time in years, we finished the year in the black. We have had a lot of introspection and consolidation. We are a fierce, lean machine.”

Mrs. Foster said Ms. Flack’s position will allow the other museum employees to maintain their focus on programming.

“The main thing that we do is really about the program; it’s about exhibits and education and art — not about raising money,” Mrs. Foster said.

For her part, Ms. Flack said she is particularly excited about the opportunity to see the museum grow.

Mrs. Foster said the museum also will be launching a renewed effort to expand its brand nationally and internationally.

“There is a national and international interest in Frederic Remington and a demand for some of the retail items that we make,” Mrs. Foster said.

She added that Ms. Flack will be working to “see how much placement of our wonderful merchandise we can have in some of the great art museums in the West.”
