The college bowl games are over, the national championship has been claimed, and the NFL playoffs are finished.

The 2013 football season has come down to today: the Denver Broncos vs. the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Peyton Manning, arguably the greatest quarterback in NFL history, will try to win his second Super Bowl and lead the high-powered Broncos to their third NFL championship.

The Seahawks will counter with versatile second-year quarterback Russell Wilson and the league’s best defense as they attempt to win their first Super Bowl.

Kickoff is at 6:25 p.m.

Before the game, accomplished opera singer Renee Fleming, a 1981 graduate of SUNY Potsdam, will perform the national anthem.

Halfway around the globe, the top winter athletes in the world are gathering in Sochi, Russia, for the Olympics, which will begin Thursday amid heightened security due to terrorist threats. The opening ceremonies are Friday.

Mikaela Shiffrin, an 18-year-old from Colorado who has extended family in Malone, could become one of the U.S. team’s brightest stars. She’ll compete in the slalom and giant slalom as the Americans try to defend their medals title from the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

The United States won 37 medals four years ago, while Germany was second with 30 and Canada third with 26.

For a preview of the Super Bowl, go to pages 1, 4, 5 and 6 in today’s Sports section, and to www.watertowndailytimes.com/section/sports on the web.

A 10-page preview of the Olympics will appear in Friday’s print edition and online at www.watertowndailytimes.com/section/sports.
