Canton, Potsdam play for girls hockey title

CANTON - Blake Orosz recorded three goals and one assist, Margret Troiano scored three goals and generated two assists and Natalie Giglio provided a goal and two assists leading Canton past Salmon River 7-0 in the semi-finals of the Section 10 Girls Hockey Tournament on Wednesday. Canton will face defending Section 10 champion Potsdam this Saturday at the Canton Pavilion starting at 7 p.m..

The winner of Saturday’s title game advances to the first-ever NYSPHSAA sanctioned girls hockey tournament which is slated for Feb. 7-8 at the Clayton Civic Center and will feature the four sectional champions from around the state.

Canton 7, Salmon River 0: The Bears (13-4-1) started scoring at 2:33 of the first period when Orosz scored from Giglio and Troiano. Almost four minutes later at 6:37, Orosz made it 2-0 from Mimi Husinec. Troiano scored at 10:50 of the first from Orosz to close out of the scoring in the first.

Orosz scored her hat trick just eight seconds into the second period unassisted and Giglio and Troiano recorded goals in the 3:48 and 14:07 marks from Troiano and Mary Kate Mace for a 6-0 lead.

In the third at 12:36, the Bears rounded out their big scoring win when Troiano landed her hat trick from a Giglio assist. Canton received seven saves from Elizabeth Burke.

Becca Leroux stopped 27 shots for the Shamrocks.

Potsdam 3, Massena 0: The 11-4-3 Stoners snapped a four game winless skid to advance.

Jayden Young intercepted a clearing attempt deep in the Massena zone then dropped the puck back to senior Ally Miller who made no mistake wristing a shot into the top right corner of the net with 41 seconds left in the middle frame.

The Lady Sandstoners quickly pushed their lead to 3-0 with goals just seven seconds apart in the opening minute of the third period.

Young scored off a rebound from Paige McCabe’s shot which Jenny Tardelli set up and Ali Miller scored from on a breakaway set up from Kalie Grant. Sidney Molnar turned aside 18 shots working the crease for the shutout while Maddi Dillabough recorded 28 saves in the losing cause.

BOYS HOCKEY

Massena 6, SR 1: Patrick Manning and Tyler Young each scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Massena to a Division I title-clincher. Evan Kassian, Ryan Thomas, J.P. Reagan and Ben Sprague also scored for Massena (12-4 overall, 10-0 division). Sean David scored for the Shamrocks (5-8-2, 3-5-1).

Potsdam 4, SLC 4 OT: Lucas Arquiett scored with 54 seconds left in the third period as SLC (9-5-1, 6-3-1) salvaged a tie with Potsdam. Arquiett and Luke Peets each scored two goals for the Larries. Logan Ford scored twice to pace Potsdam (5-8-1, 4-3-1). Corson Green and Josh Locey also scored for the Sandstoners.
