Teachers will help colleagues adapt to Common Core changes at Madrid-Waddington

MADRID — Madrid-Waddington Central School District administrators will select six teachers to act as district leaders to help their colleagues adapt to curriculum changes, including the Common Core.

The program is sponsored by the state Education Department and will be supervised by the St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services.

The “district leaders” also will measure the success of the district in implementing the new standards.

“I see it as a major catalyst for continued professional development and implementation of the Common Core,” Superintendent Lynn M. Roy said last week. “Again, I can’t help but say this, but this should have come first before implementation instead of trying to build it after the fact. If this had come first, I don’t think we would have seen the problems we did with implementation.”

School districts can choose up to nine district leaders. Mrs. Roy proposed the school board choose one kindergarten through 12th grade literacy specialist, a universal prekindergarten through fifth grade and a sixth through 12th grade math specialist, and one English language arts teacher each from third through fifth grade, prekindergarten through second grade, and sixth through 12th grade.

Teachers will be selected for the program based on criteria and qualifications set by each school’s administrators.

The program will supplement the district’s Leadership Committee, Mrs. Roy said.

“It’s a great idea, and it’s giving people who have experience in a specific content area a leadership role,” she said. “It’s a little late in coming, but we’re not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I think it is a very applicable program.”

The move is one of the many the district is making to help teachers, parents and students adapt to the recent rollout of more rigorous education standards under Common Core last year.

The district also is sponsoring an informational presentation on the Common Core for parents Feb. 8.
