CARTHAGE — With work still to be done, a local doctor again is heading to her homeland to offer medical relief following the devastating Typhoon Haiyan that hit the Philippines in November.

Dr. Jocelyn C. Aznar-Beane is headed back to Cebu, accompanied by a nurse from her practice.

“They are recovering slowly but surely, but the situation is still dire,” the doctor said.

She is coordinating with a Southwestern University classmate from Thailand to distribute donated goods.

On the first trip after the typhoon, the Family Medicine Center family practitioner provided medical care and other forms of aid, and she will do so again.

Dr. Aznar-Beane said the focus of the return trip will be carpentry.

Through her efforts and those of her fellow alumni, 70 houses have been rebuilt.

She is still gathering funds to aid in the relief effort. Checks, made payable to Southwestern University Medical Alumni Foundation Inc., can be dropped off at Dr. Aznar-Beane’s office, 214 Church St.

Licensed practical nurse Velma J. LaComb of Beaver Falls will travel with Dr. Aznar-Beane. She has worked with the doctor for nearly two years.

Ms. LaComb is no stranger to relief efforts, having traveled to Haiti four times following the 2010 earthquake that devastated the island nation.

“I like helping people out and seeing different cultures,” she said. “I’m hoping to help with the medical mission and to give food. I’m anxious to go.”

Ms. LaComb is paying her own expenses and would welcome any help to defray the cost of the trip.

The two will be gone from Feb. 23 through March 7.
