OGDENSBURG — A part-time Ogdensburg City Court judge has been appointed by Mayor William D. Nelson to replace A. Michael Gebo, who had served since 2011.

Gary R. Alford, who has operated a private law practice in the city since 2000, will take over as Mr. Gebo starts a new job as assistant district attorney under District Attorney Mary E. Rain on Monday.

“I think Judge Gebo did a very good job,” Mr. Nelson said. “I think he’ll do a very good job as an assistant district attorney.”

Mr. Alford graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1973 and received his juris doctorate from the University at Buffalo Law School in 1998.

Mr. Nelson said Mr. Alford was a standout candidate for the position because of his willingness to serve, his credentials and his community spirit.

Mr. Alford has served in a number of positions in local organizations over the years, including as president of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, an Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority board member and a trustee and chairman of the Morristown Gateway Museum.

Mr. Nelson said he believes Mr. Alford will be responsive to the city’s needs, including to the Ogdensburg Police Department, which often requires judges to head to court at night and early in the morning for arraignments.

“That’s extremely important,” Mr. Nelson said. “They need to have a judge available.”

Originally from Morristown, Mr. Alford has lived in Ogdensburg for 22 years.

He is married to the former Sharon Lightfoot and has two children, Jonathan and Nathaniel.

According to the state Office of Court Administration, Mr. Alford will make $34,700 a year as part-time city judge.

Judicial appointments are for six years.
