City Council tables Watertown’s sidewalk program

The Watertown City Council tabled a resolution Tuesday night approving this year’s version of the annual sidewalk program after receiving a request to extend the proposed district.

On Dec. 2, the City Council selected portions of 11 streets to include in this year’s program. But representatives of Emmanuel Congregational Church asked the council to amend the district to allow public sidewalks to be repaired in front of the church’s parking lot at 119 S. Hamilton St.

Council members held off approving the program to give time for City Engineer Kurt W. Hauk to determine how the additional 300 square feet of sidewalks would affect this year’s program. Church members told the council that the church’s insurance agent advised them to make the sidewalk repairs.

As the program is now planned, residents would pay $5.25 per square foot for the work over a 10-year period, hire a contractor or do the work themselves.

The streets chosen are Brainard and Cadwell streets, Flower Avenue East, Park Avenue and Franklin, Gotham, Hamlin, Myrtle, Nellis, William and Winslow streets.

Work on the sidewalks is slated to start at the end of April and be completed this fall.

Mayor Jeffrey E. Graham was absent because of an emergency.
