Ogdensburg Department of Public Works employees will be back on Hamilton Street Wednesday to attempt to find and fix a leaking water main after today’s attempt to repair it failed.

DPW Supervisor Gregg E. Harland said the cold weather today made the potential for harm to workers and equipment more acute. Mr. Harland said equipment failure is more likely in the cold. Temperatures remained below zero throughout the day.

“It’s not that bad of a leak,” Mr. Harland said. “If it was a worse leak than that it would be different.”

DPW employees were dispatched to Hamilton Street, in front of St. Mary’s Cathedral, at about 11:30 a.m. after water was discovered seeping up through the sidewalk. Crews worked all afternoon to find the leak but couldn’t see it even after digging down to the water main.

“We will chase it tomorrow,” Mr. Harland said. “We barricaded the sidewalk and salted it.”

Mr. Harland said the leak isn’t running into the street and shouldn’t pose any trouble for traffic.

According to the National Weather Service, Wednesday’s high temperature is forecast at -2 degrees.
