Lisbon, Canton Return to Darcy Finals

LISBON - Host Lisbon and Canton took opposite routes reach tonight’s championshipgame of the James Darcy Memorial Tournament.

Defending champion Lisbon used is swarming defense and Jimmy Robinson’s athletic scoring around the goal to break away early and cruise to a 64-34 NAC West Division win over Hammond.

On the other hand Canton needed every second to avoid a second overtime game with Salmon River as Scott Wightburied a 15-foot baseline jumper to give the Bears a 60-58 win. Lisbon and Salmon River will play for the JV title at 4 p.m. today and the varsity consolation and championship games will follow.

Lisbon 64. Hammond 34: The Golden Knights (11-1, 9-0) jumped to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter and maintained control to remain unbeaten atop the NAC West.

“We played well but Canton is going to be a tough match for us. Tonight, their game with Salmon River was very entertaining,” said LCS coach Sean Backus.

Jimmy Robinson was active on both sides of the ball scoring 24 points and being very dominate on the boards with 17 rebounds. Jake Putney delivered 15 points and hit two threes while Alex Gravlin added six points. Koby Jordan tallied five points while Tristan Vine chipped in six assists and four points and Adam Kelley added six assists. Brock Tulley tallied 12 points with a three pointer of Hammond (4-8, 3-7 NAC West). Payton Frisina added 10 points with two threes. Nick Jewitt had five points.

Canton 60, Salmon River 58: Scott Wight’s buzzer beater lifts the Bears (4-6) past the resilient Shamrocks (3-7) who rallied from deficits as large as eight points and a took a lead into the final minute. Louden Porter tied the game at 58-58 with 42.1 second remaining and The Bears were able to run down its last possession.

Porter scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for Canton while Evan LaPoint generated 15 points and two key assists in the final minute. Wight added 15 points while Mike Couglar chipped in six.

Antoine Domino scored 20 for Salmon River with nine in the fourth quarter. Karson Tarbell scored 10 while Zach Smith and Josh Hynes finished with nine and eight.

NAC EAST

Tupper Lake 62, N-N 31: Cody LaPierre tallied 16 points and Mitch Keniston scored 14 points as the visiting Lumberjacks (9-5, 7-3) used a 26-6 start to deny host N-N (3-9, 2-8).

Ian St. Andrews scored nine for the Flyers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Malone 48, Canton 42: The Huskies earned a very big NAC Central home win against the Bears to stay unbeaten at 10-0 (10-3 overall).

“We did a good job stopping Canton’s three-point shooting. I think they had seven threes in the last game, they only had two tonight (Monday),” said Malone coach Shelley Skelly.

Janelle Heden tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. For the Bears (10-3. 7-2) who only won the fourth quarter 15-11, Kali Frank scored 12 and Emma Pinckney, Tori Daley and Natalie DiSalvo each logged eight.

Tupper Lake 42, Norwood-Norfolk 23: Lindsay Maroun tossed in 16 and Katie Zurek tallied 12 points leading host Tupper Lake (3-8, 2-6 NAC East) past the visiting Flyers (2-8, 2-7 NAC East) keyed by a 17-4 first quarter start and 28-10 halftime lead. Lizzie Zurek added eight boards, five assists and four points in the win.

Mason paced N-N with six. Hannah Seguin and Marianna Langtry each scored four.
