Fire departments from the towns of Watertown and Rutland were called to a house fire Sunday at 24853 Route 126 in the town of Watertown across from Stewart’s Shop.

Frederick D. Lampman, deputy director of Jefferson County Fire and Emergency Management, said the owner of the one-story house was not home when the fire started about 3 p.m., causing extensive damage.

About 3:20 p.m., crews on the scene were using a chain saw to get to flames contained inside the home’s tin roof. Mr. Lampman said it appeared most of the damage took place in the home’s attic.

Jefferson County fire investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen, but an investigation is still ongoing, said Ralph A. Green Jr., town of Watertown first assistant fire chief.

“We had the fire knocked down in five to eight minutes after arriving, and then we worked to find the hot spots,” Mr. Green said. “The damage was extensive because of the metal roof. There was heavy smoke and heat damage.”

State police and town of Watertown ambulance crews also responded.

Times staff writer Ted Booker contributed to this report.
