CANTON — Trent A. Trulock has resigned after 17 years as director of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association to take a job with St. Lawrence Brewing Co.

“This opportunity just came up and I decided to go with a different passion,” said Mr. Trulock, who is an investor in the brewery with his wife, Cindy A. Eyler. “This is a chance for us to participate in what’s going on with the brewery and help it grow.”

Mr. Trulock said he will be traveling around the state, marketing products made by the brewery, which began canning three varieties of beer last week.

Mr. Trulock’s last day as director of the Historical Association and as county historian will be Jan. 31.

He said he is looking forward to a new challenge.

“It also gives me the opportunity to live here and do a little bit of traveling around the state and then come back here,” he said.

Historical Association board President Jane M. Subramanian said Mr. Trulock accomplished a lot during his time at the association, which is housed at the Silas Wright House in Canton. He was instrumental in the effort to build the association’s red barn addition, home to its archives, she said.

“It’s really made a tremendous difference,” Ms. Subramanian said. “One of the things I appreciate most about his time here is he has worked hard to restore excellent communications with all of the local historians. It’s been helpful for the entire region.”

Any success was due to the people who supported the association, Mr. Trulock said. “It’s a lot of work by a lot of different people.”

The association’s board, which meets Thursday, already has begun the process of finding a replacement, Ms. Subramanian said. Although no decision has been made, the board could appoint J. Susanne Longshore, the association’s collections manager and its only other full-time employee, as interim director.

“She’s done that before,” said Carlton E. Stickney, a former board president. “She knows what’s going on.”

Mr. Trulock said he has let County Administrator Karen M. St. Hilaire know of his plans to leave the historian’s position and suggested Mrs. Longshore as his replacement.
