Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Thursday the nomination of Richard A. Ball as commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture and Markets.
Cape Vincent resident Darrel J. Aubertine resigned from the post in October after serving for three years and took a position at the office of the state comptroller.
Mr. Ball has been employed in the agriculture industry throughout his career. For the past 20 years, he has owned and operated the 200-acre Schoharie Valley Farms in Schoharie, which produces vegetables, fruits and greenhouse crops. The farm serves retail and wholesale customers through an on-site market and ships to brokers and restaurants in the local area and New York City.
Mr. Ball has held a number of agriculture and community positions at local, state and national levels, including as vice president of the New York State Vegetable Growers Association and chairman of the labor committee for the New York Farm Bureau.
