Austin Stevens scored a game-high 17 points and the South Jefferson girls basketball team outlasted General Brown, 31-24, to capture a Frontier League “B” Division victory in Spartans’ coach Pat Bassett’s return to the sidelines Saturday at Jefferson Community College.

South Jefferson, which improved to 3-0, hadn’t played since Dec. 6. Bassett was put on administrative leave from Dec. 10-17 for undisclosed reasons, and two additional games were since canceled due to weather. General Brown is the only league team to play the Spartans within single digits in a regular-season game in three years. The Lions lost by five on Jan. 24 last year, but South Jefferson was without Stevens, its leading scorer at the time.

Katie Pitkin scored 12 points to lead General Brown (5-3 overall, 4-3 league).
