ADAMS — Northern Federal Credit Union’s branch and two adjacent businesses in the Tops Friendly Market plaza on Route 11 were forced to close Friday morning when a sprinkler system pipe burst in the ceiling.

Robert D. Simpson, public information officer for the Adams Fire Department, said about 6 inches of water flooded the credit union’s floor, prompting its closure along with the neighboring South Jeff Wine & Liquor and South Jeff Physical Therapy.

The Adams Fire Department and National Grid were called to assess the damage and make sure an electrical fire did not occur.

The incident occurred about 11:30 a.m. Tops remained open, although part of the store was dark.

Joel H. Grimshaw and Heather A. Miller, co-owners of the physical therapy business, said they were with a handful of clients when they heard a swooshing sound in the next room and found a pipe burst in the ceiling, causing it to fall.

About 15 people were inside the bank when the mishap occurred, Mr. Grimshaw said. No one was injured.

He surmised the pipe burst in an empty storefront.

“There’s enough water I got my feet pretty wet,” he said.

Firefighters remained at the plaza for several hours to make sure it was safe.

In a news release, Northern Federal Credit Union officials said they did not know when the Adams branch would reopen, as they were still assessing the damage.

Mr. Grimshaw said the physical therapy business probably would not be open next week. He suggested clients call to find out more information.

As for the liquor store, Mr. Simpson said it was not damaged and could reopen as soon as electricity was turned back on.
