Hammond to consider adding transfer station

HAMMOND — Town Council members will decide Wednesday whether to install a transfer station to make trash dispersal more convenient for residents.

St. Lawrence County Legislator Alex A. MacKinnon, R-Fowler, suggested last month that the town install a transfer station that would support the St. Lawrence County Solid Waste Department. The county operates transfer stations in Ogdensburg, Massena, Gouverneur and Star Lake.

A new transfer station would mean that Hammond residents would not have to travel nearly 20 miles to the closest stations, in Ogdensburg and Gouverneur, to get rid of their trash.

“The costs would remain the same, but they would save money on gas,” Mr. MacKinnon said.

The program would support local haulers and the county’s recent $1 million investment for new equipment — an over-the-road tractor, eight trailers, two stationary compactors, a recycling compactor, and a plow truck — to haul heavier loads of garbage to the Development Authority of the North Country’s landfill in the Jefferson County town of Rodman, Mr. MacKinnon said.

But there still could be additional costs to taxpayers.

“You have to have somebody there,” town Highway Superintendent Donald H. Greene said.

Insurance costs also would be an issue, council member James C. Pitcher said.

“The problem is policing it,” Mr. MacKinnon said. “There are a lot of ifs and maybes. It’s just a concept whether you want something like that in the town. It’s something people are talking about. Before anything could be done, there is a whole bunch of logistics to be done.”

The council will meet at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Hammond Free Library, 17 N. Main St.
