The Jefferson County Dog Shelter picked up 517 dogs in 2013, 45 dogs fewer than the year before, according to Todd L. Cummings, dog control supervisor.
Though the number fluctuates from year to year, there is a general downward movement in the number of dogs the agency collects each year, Mr. Cummings said.
A total of 562 dogs were collected in 2012.
He attributed the trend to better pet care and the fact that more owners are spaying and neutering their pets.
On Thursday afternoon, the shelter had only five dogs on hand after two were adopted earlier in the day.
